“During the Neolithic and Chalcolithic (VII-V millennium BC) throughout the vast territory of the Neolithic culture, the only deity was the Great Mother. She was not some separate supreme being against the background of the rest of the world. From the general view of the artifacts, we can come to the conclusion that the Neolithic Goddess is rather the world itself in its entirety, with its visible and invisible sides.” ( Yulia Boeva , Prehistoric Symbols in the Svilenitsa of Sofia, 2021)
In the painting “The Only Deity” the emphasis is on images of the Great Goddess from embroideries in the Sofia and Pleven regions. The system of symbols in the embroideries is mixed – composed of images and abstract signs. The symbols have spatial variants, which are presented through: arrangement (straight symmetry), mirroring (two-sided symmetry) and cross-shaped (four-sided symmetry). The depicted elements of the embroidery from both regions describe, through symbolic language, the functions of the prehistoric Goddess – Movement, Life, Knowledge, as processes of triggering intrauterine development, conception and, by analogy, death, transitions between corporeality and incorporeality. All this is a record of knowledge about the prehistoric wisdom of the world, which has survived to this day thanks to tradition.
