The Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis: A Masterpiece of Ancient Heritage
A painting inspired by the cultural heritage of one of the oldest cities on the continent – Plovdiv.
Peacocks and rosettes, crosses and meanders, ancient solar symbols, and a multitude of bird species: these are fragments of our cultural heritage (2nd–6th century AD) found in the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis in Plovdiv. They are beautiful and profoundly meaningful.
Over 100 birds of various species are depicted through the expressive medium of mosaic. Most of them are situated around the altar of the Basilica, forming a symbolic representation of the Garden of Eden. Particularly impressive is the rosette-like peacock with its tail spread – an ancient symbol of the immortality of the soul – occupying a central position before the main entrance of the temple. The Solomon’s knot represents loyalty, love, and immortality, while the kantharos is a vessel for water or wine symbolizing the Source of Life. In this sacred space, Christian symbols share the floor with geometric motifs from the preceding era, serving as a vital testament to continuity, preserved within the Episcopal Basilica.
The serial property “The Episcopal Basilica and Late Antique Mosaics of Philippopolis, Roman Province of Thrace” is located in Plovdiv (ancient Philippopolis) and consists of three immovable cultural properties: the Episcopal Basilica, the Small Basilica, and the “Eirene” Late Antique Building.
